FM 969 speed study done

TXDOT has informed Friends of the Land that its request for a speed reduction study for FM 969 in Bastrop County is completed. Friends asked county officials for the study after four fatal accidents in four months.

The study findings support reducing the speed from 65 mph to 60, a TXDOT spokesperson said. No details were made public but the recommendation will be made to the TXDOT Commission at it August meeting. The reason for the delay is that part of the road lies in the city of Bastrop and it must vote on whether to approve the request.

A Friends analysis of TXDOT accident data shows that accidents involving 18-wheeler has steadily increased over the past three years. In the past six months, four new sand and gravel mines, a concrete batch plant, and a rock crushing facility have received TCEQ permit approval for operating in the county, all but one of them on FM 969.
